It all begins at Springland Farm, a plantation once owned by John Adlum, known as the father of American viticulture. Right here in Northwest Washington, Adlum successfully grew the first American wine varietal, launching the story of winemaking in the United States.
As the city expanded, the land evolved. Springland Farm was subdivided and became a center of scientific innovation when the National Bureau of Standards moved in. It was here that the world’s first atomic clock was developed, quietly redefining how time itself is measured.
Innovation continued when the Intelsat Consortium built a bold, forward-thinking green building on the site, decades before climate-conscious design entered the mainstream.
